UAM College of Technology at Crossett Recieves $150,000 from DRA

The Delta Regional Authority (DRA) announced Tuesday $1.5 million in workforce development grants to 11 organizations across the Mississippi River Delta Region, including a $150,000 grant to UAM College of Technology at Crossett (UAM-CTC). "DRA is committed to investing in workforce training and education that supports job seekers, incumbent workers, and employers to help foster comprehensive economic development in Delta communities," said DRA Federal Co-Chairman Chris Caldwell in a DRA release.

UAM-CTC received the largest amount available through the grant, which will be used to expand the welding lab on the campus. "Our concurrent welding student enrollment has been steadily growing, and along with our full-time welding program, we are in great need of space. We look forward to using these grant funds to continue to invest in this valuable career training opportunity for students from Ashley county and beyond," said Linda Rushing, UAM-CTC Vice Chancellor. The grant comes during a difficult year for Crossett, whose Georgia-Pacific facilities have seen hundreds of layoffs since the announcement of the closure of its bleached board operations this summer.

Both a certificate of proficiency in welding and a technical certificate in welding technology are available on the Crossett campus, and welding students often progress to earn an associate of applied science in General Technology. UAM-CTC offers associate's degrees, certificates of proficiency, and technical certificate programs aimed at providing students with entry level to advanced skills necessary in a competitive job market.
